BA lease Prestwick hangar

British Airways has leased the former Polar Air cargo engineering hangar at Prestwick Airport as a satellite facility for its engineering base at Glasgow Airport. British Airways Maintenance Glasgow (BAMG) carries out all major maintenance on British Airways Airbus and Boeing 737 aircraft. It was recently been awarded a major new contract by BA to carry out additional engineering work on the Airbus fleet and will use the Prestwick hangar to do the work.
The move is the first time the operation has expanded outside its Glasgow Airport hanger since it was established 45 years ago. BAMG operates two lines of engineering work, one each for the Airbus family of aircraft and the Boeing 737 fleet. From September Airbus aircraft will now also position to Prestwick where BAMG will carry out the additional maintenance requirements.
BAMG's workforce increased from 230 to just over 300 in less than two years. A team of more than 30 engineers from BAMG’s Glasgow Airport base will move to Prestwick to set up the new facility. The project is being fully funded by British Airways and involves no public sector finance.
Prestwick Airport’s Chief Commercial Officer Graeme Sweenie said: ‘We’re delighted to have attracted British Airways to Prestwick. It’s great to see such a fantastic facility being fully utilised again. We already have a world-class maintenance, repair and operations cluster around the airport and the addition of BA Maintenance Glasgow will further enhance our reputation for engineering excellence.’
