NZ flight lands at NZ owned UK airport
24.12.10
The snow and ice that closed Heathrow at the weekend and earlier this week had an unexpected consequence - an Air New Zealand flight landed at a New Zealand-owned UK airport. Wellington-based infrastructure investor Infratil said in its operational update today that on December 19 Prestwick Airport received the NZ39 flight from Auckland, which was diverted from snowbound Heathrow. Passengers completed the long trip south by bus.
Infratil said: ‘This may well be the first time that a New Zealand commercial air service has landed at a New Zealand-owned airport outside of New Zealand. Prestwick is near the coast and is only very infrequently closed by weather.' It was a shame for the passengers that the Infratil owned Manston Airport in Kent was not open to take the diverted flight, as it would have shaved several hours from their diversion.
