Prestwick Airport posts poor December figures
24.01.06
Prestwick Airport posted poor December passenger figures due to reduced airline traffic. December freight volumes were 'particularly disappointing', falling 23% on year, the company said.
One of the factors behind the weak freight performance was the reduced number of dedicated aircraft passing through the airport, which saw fewer special Christmas freight flights compared with 2004.
Total passenger numbers rose just 1% in December compared to the previous December, hitting 167,110. Passenger numbers in the year to December were up 12% on the previous year at 1.9 million.
Looking forward, the company was optimistic passenger traffic would pick up. Infratil, who own Prestwick airport, said that Wizz Air will commence flights on March 28 to Warsaw and Gdansk in Poland from Prestwick. Transavia, an offshoot of the KLM / Air France group, plans to start services between Prestwick and Amsterdam in late March.
