MSPs hold prisoner flights debate
22.12.05
The issue of CIA 'prisoner transfer' flights using Scottish airports is to be debated by MSPs.
Some MSPs have called for the police to investigate claims that the US used the airports to move terror suspects who then faced a risk of torture.
The debate has been called by the Scottish Socialist Party, which wants Lord Advocate Colin Boyd to order police to investigate. Until now the Scottish Executive and Scottish police have refused to open an investigation, saying that no evidence has been produced to justify the measure.
The Scottish Greens said Lord Advocate Colin Boyd's credibility would be 'on the line' if he does not order an investigation. Chris Ballance MSP said: 'I find it quite incredible that, on such a serious matter, the police refuse to investigate allegations that Prestwick Airport is being used as a stopover for extraordinary rendition flights.'
'Amnesty International have now published details of two CIA flights which apparently landed at Prestwick on the return journey back to the US after having taken detainees to other countries. I see no reason why such evidence of crime is not sufficient to trigger an investigation.'
