MSP to continue fight for truth over terror flights
20.11.06
An MSP has promised to continue his battle to force police to divulge what advice they received from ministers over illegal CIA flights ferrying torture victims through Prestwick Airport, despite losing a freedom of information ruling.
Green MSP Chris Ballance reported the allegations to Strathclyde Police last December and requested a meeting with investigators to give them further evidence. Instead, police consulted with ministers and prosecutors before deciding not to meet the MSP, who referred the issue to the Scottish Information Commissioner, Kevin Dunion. He has now ruled that, although the police did breach some of the technicalities of the freedom of information procedures, they were entitled to withhold these files.
Mr Ballance said: 'This raises more questions than answers. What advice did the executive give to the police over my request? Why, when there was ample evidence that a crime was taking place, did the police ask the government for political advice? I shall be writing to the police to ask them what is their criteria for referring cases for political advice before taking action.'
