Passengers down 1% at Prestwick Airport
19.07.07
A total of 201,013 scheduled passengers passed through Prestwick Airport during June, down 1% on the prior year figure. The airport said that the fall in passengers can be partly explained by a reduction in loads on the airport's most popular route, Stansted, which carried 5,200 passengers less passengers last month than in June 2006 - 'reflecting continuing softness in the UK domestic market generally'.
Prestwick's four Polish routes continued their strong recent performance in June, while Spanish services also had high load factors as they approach their seasonal peak. The airport also handled 3,062 tonnes of freight in June, a 16% improvement on the same month in 2006 and 19% up on May's total.
As previously reported, the terrorist attack on Glasgow Airport, saw a number of flights diverted to Prestwick Airport on 30 June and 1 July. Despite the challenges of heightened security at that time, the flights were handled effectively, along with uninterrupted normal services, the airport said.
