Prestwick Airport passengers up 10% in October

Passengers using Prestwick airport increased by 10 percent last month, as its annual passenger number soared towards 2.4 million.
Scotland's fourth largest airport handled 222,278 travellers in October, with its year-on-year total up by 11 percent to 2,389,178. The Ayrshire airport is growing faster than Aberdeen, the most rapidly expanding of the top three airports and the one Prestwick is chasing for third place. Aberdeen is currently growing at an annualised 8.4 percent, with 2.8 million annual passengers.
Infratil, Prestwick airport's owners, said yesterday that its latest new route, to Krakow, would be offset by reduced winter frequencies on some of Ryanair's other routes, to Germany and Scandinavia.
Infratil also reported freight volumes were down by 22 per cent last month at Prestwick compared with a year ago, partly because of industrial action by pilots at freight carrier Polar, which has since been resolved.
The figures follow Infratil announcing plans to double the size of the passenger departure lounge at Prestwick, which The Scotsman revealed last month. The existing 2,300 square metre lounge will be replaced with a 5000 sq m area, enabling an increase in capacity from three million to five million.
