Freight up but passengers down at Prestwick Airport
18.01.07
Freight volumes at Prestwick Airport were up more than 10 percent in December, but passenger numbers fell by 3.8 percent.
The airport handled a total of 160,832 passengers in December against 167,110 in 2005. The fall was blamed on reduced capacity on a number of Ryanair routes during the winter. A new three-times-weekly service to Grenoble in the French Alps began operating during the month. This has replaced the Marseille route during the winter, with Ryanair keen to secure some seasonal ski traffic.
December was a strong month for freight at the airport, with 2,481 tonnes handled. The 10.5 percent year on year increase is 'in-keeping with recent improvements in freight throughput,' a spokesman for owners Infratil said.
