Passengers up 2.5% at Prestwick Airport

Prestwick Airport handled 221,839 passengers in May, up 2.5% on 2007 and a 12% improvement on April’s performance. The airport handled 202,710 scheduled passengers and 19,129 charter passengers, from 194,131 scheduled and 22,402 charter in May 2007.
The main driver for the growth was increased capacity on a number of existing routes, plus new Ryanair and Wizz Air destinations, introduced since May last year.
The beginning of the month saw the relaunch of Ryanair’s Marseille service - a summer replacement for its winter ski flights to Grenoble - while Scottravel began weekly charter flights to Dalaman in Turkey towards the end of the month.
Ryanair also announced three new winter ‘sun’ routes during the month, which are all due to begin operations at the end of October. The new destinations are Malaga, Tenerife and Faro – all traditionally popular with Scottish holidaymakers.
Prestwick Airport handled 2,704 tonnes of freight during May, up 5% on the prior year performance, but 6% lower than April's 2871 figure. The loss of Atlas Air European freighter flights, announced earlier this week, is likely to result in a material loss of business going forward.
