Prestwick Airport policing dispute
15.02.08
Strathclyde Police and Prestwick Airport are in dispute over who should pay for extra anti-terror officers at the terminal.
Every major airport in Scotland had until November last year to seal a legally binding service agreement with its local force. Only Prestwick, which is owned by Infratil of New Zealand, has not yet done so.
The new rules making airport operators pay for increased policing came in response to heightened terror threats but pre-dated the attack on Glasgow Airport last summer. They are overseen by Transec, the security wing of the UK Department for Transport.
Jim Green, an assistant chief constable at Strathclyde, said: ‘Legislation provided for a police servicing agreement to have been put in place by November 7 last year. The chief constable has referred the matter to Transec to invoke the arbitration process. It is hoped an early resolution can be agreed.’
A spokesman for Prestwick Airport said: ‘There is a government-defined process for an airport and police to ascertain the appropriate level of policing necessary for an airport. We have followed this process. Each airport will have different needs and therefore the level of policing will vary across airports.’
