Newcastle Airport's new chief executive has said that, when the time comes, he will give a full account of events surrounding the departure of his predecessor. In March, the airport suspended John Parkin and it is currently undertaking a 'robust legal action' in connection with a bonus of almost £6m he was set to receive. Mr Parkin resigned and is now chief executive at Leeds Bradford Airport.
In The Journal newspaper on Monday, the new boss at Newcastle Airport, David Laws, also speaks of hopes for the future, including a burning desire to establish a scheduled daily flight to the United States. The 50-year-old, who has worked his way to the top after starting at the airport 28 years ago as a fireman, says his new charge is crucial to the regeneration of the region.
He says: 'Newcastle Airport is at the heart of the region. I want to make this airport into a regional asset that every single one of us in the North-East can be proud of.' He also reveals his admiration for Sir Alan Sugar and Sir Bobby Robson and how his son tells people: 'My daddy works in the sky.'
