Newcastle Airport boss calls on Government to axe air tax
11.06.09
The boss of Newcastle Airport has urged the Government to follow the lead of the Netherlands in scrapping taxes to defend its flight routes. David Laws, the airport's chief executive, said that airport taxes were the single greatest threat for the future with some routes set to experience a doubling in air passenger duty in the next two years under Government plans to revise and increase air passenger duty (APD).
Speaking at the North East Chamber of Commerce’s annual meeting, Mr Laws called on the Government to emulate its Dutch counterparts who performed a taxation U-turn after recognising the severe impact the taxes would have on Schiphol Airport. He said that Newcastle Airport, which employs around 3,000 staff, had been performing better than many regional airports, but was concerned for the effects of the tax, which will increase tax on all routes, with long haul passengers paying an extra £20.
