Thousands of weapons seized at Newcastle Airport in 2007
07.01.08
Weapons ranging from knuckle-dusters to cleavers have been seized from holidaymakers at Newcastle Airport in 2007. Security staff confiscated thousands of items from passengers arriving or departing from the airport.
Airport duty manager Jon Sunderland said: 'Over the course of the year, a number of prohibited items are confiscated from passengers. Many are sharp items, some of which are actually illegal and are referred to the police. They have ranged from scissors to replica firearms or even real firearms.'
'In most cases, items that are confiscated are innocent. For example, we have a lot of incidents of people taking extra kitchen knives out to holiday homes on the continent and things like that, but unfortunately we can't let people travel with them.'
