Computer glitch hits duty free shoppers at Newcastle Airport

A computer glitch left shoppers out of pocket when it charged them a number of times for goods bought at Newcastle Airport.
The duty free shop at Newcastle Airport is refunding travellers who were hit by a computer glitch while shopping late last month. One customer saw a number of different payments, totalling £130, hit her credit card account after she bought a £37 bottle of aftershave at the store.
Alpha Retail, the company that runs the duty-free shop in the airport's departure lounge, said a computer glitch had seen it charge shoppers multiple times. The problems happened between between Wednesday and Friday last week.
Avril Appleyard for the Alpha Retail said the company was 'very sorry' for the mishap and was in the process of refunding customers. She added: 'We experienced a glitch in our card processing system and that resulted in card transactions being processed multiple times. But, as we speak, we are refunding all those transactions that shouldn't have gone through.'
'We are very sorry for any inconvenience caused in anyway to our customers. This has not happened before and we don't expect it to ever happen again.'
