Over 200,000 fly off from Manchester Airport for New Year

Around 216,000 passengers will fly from Manchester Airport over the New Year (between yesterday and Wednesday). Despite the struggling economy, the figure is expected to be up 6.6 percent on last year.
An airport spokesman said many workers are getting an extra days holiday because New Year's Day falls on a Sunday – and they are taking advantage of this to fly away for a short break to destinations including European cities of Lisbon, Madrid, Oslo, Milan and Dublin, which New York popular for couples looking for a romantic way to celebrate the start of 2012.
Some 132,000 passengers flew from Manchester over the Christmas holiday weekend, a 6 percent increase on last year. Around 673,000 passengers are expected to pass through the airport between December 19 and January 4 – the entire Christmas and new year period.
