Manchester Airport hanging basket courses ‘beat stress’ !

Manchester Airport is reducing staff sickness and stress with training sessions on everything from making hanging baskets to photography, the Evening News reports. Hundreds of workers – including everyone from senior managers to coach drivers – are being given time away from their day-to-day jobs to take part in the sessions at Manchester Airport's learning centre. And more than 200 people have already completed short courses in nine subjects, with a further 400 on waiting lists.
The 'Airport Learn' scheme is costing £120,000 – with the bill being shared between the centre's partners, Manchester Airport, Trafford college, Myerscough college and the trade unions Unison and Unite. The airport says benefits include a reduction in sickness, fewer complaints from customers, better quality of work and increased employee happiness.
One of the most popular workshops is a horticultural demonstration, where staff are shown how to make hanging baskets. Myerscough college's short course and training development manager Colin Todhunter oversaw the hanging basket demonstration. He told the newspaper: ‘Our tutor covers the basics of how to make a hanging basket and the students follow what he does – a bit like Blue Peter. They all went away with smiles on their faces- it was a light-hearted subject, everyone got into it and the sessions gave them chance to do something different away from the office environment.’
