Manchester Airport ban fireworks
25.08.08
The size of fireworks families can set off near Manchester Airport are to be limited from now on to make take-offs and landings safer for pilots, the Manchester Evening News reports. Airport chiefs are banning the use of rockets or more powerful Category 3 fireworks within 1.1 miles either side of the runways or up to three miles away under the flight paths.
The aim of the ban is to protect pilots from being dazzled by unexpected fireworks. It has been announced during the summer wedding season, and applies all year round and not just in the run up to Bonfire Night. People who ignore it could be charged with endangering an aircraft, which carries a prison sentence of up to 5 years.
The airport will shut for 15 minutes on the nearest two Saturdays to November 5 so families living nearby can hold their annual displays.
