New security measure for Manchester Airport car park
23.08.08
Manchester Airport has added a new security measure to its car parks in a bid to tackle terrorism. Automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) cameras have been installed at five car parks around Manchester Airport to check for uninsured and stolen vehicles or those that have been involved in crime.
The new security system can scan 600,000 number plates a day and checks them against information stored on the police national database. Peter Turner, Manchester Airport Police Chief, said: ‘ANPR is unique in its ability to impact on crime at every level, from local volume crime through to cross border and organised crime and counter terrorism.
‘These new camera sites will provide officers with an additional source of information during the early stages of investigations and will help in our fight against terrorism.’
