Manchester Airport strike cancelled
17.07.08
Cleaners working for Initial Air Services at Manchester Airport have called off strike action planned for today following a last minute pay offer by the company. Talks between Unite and Initial held on Monday concluded with a pay offer of 3.5%, which will be backdated to February.
Unite members at Initial have voted by 78% to accept the new pay deal. The 200 Unite members were due to start strike action from 06:00 am today until 06;00 on Sunday (July 20) following the company's decision to impose a 2% pay offer previously rejected by workers.
Unite Organiser, Sharon Cowell said: ‘Following the threat of strike action we have managed to secure a reasonable pay deal for our members. Strike action planned for today will no longer take place.'
‘Our members did not want to strike, but have been left with no option because of the pay offer being imposed by the company. We want to send a clear message to contractors at Manchester Airport. If they choose to impose a non-negotiated pay deal then we will retaliate.’
