Terror arrests at Manchester Airport
16.08.08
Two men have been arrested at Manchester Airport on Thursday night on suspicion of terrorism offences, while a third was detained in nearby in Accrington, police said. The men, who have not been named, were held after a joint operation between Lancashire Constabulary and the Greater Manchester Counter-Terrorism Unit.
Anti-terrorist officers swooped on the trio as two of the men were about to fly out of the UK, and the third man was at his work. Police gave no details of those held or why they were arrested. The airport's operations were not affected.
The three men are Asian and aged aged 21, 22 and 23, according to media reports. Two are said to be British-born brothers who live in a terraced house next door to their parents, originally from Pakistan, in Blackburn. The third suspect lives nearby with his family. Specialist officers have been searching the houses.
Police were last night given an extra seven days to quiz the three terror suspects, who had been under surveillance for months. However, police sources confirmed the arrests were not linked to previous terror attacks and were at the ‘less serious’ end of the scale for such offences.
