Government asset sales could include local authority owned airports
13.10.09
Business Secretary Lord Mandelson said yesterday that local authority owned airports, such as Manchester, could be sold off as part of Government plans to cut its budget deficit, Crain’s reports. Speaking on BBC Radio 4's Today Programme, he said the scope of the asset sales would cover not just central Government but also local Government assets. He told the programme: ‘There are business parks industrial estates, leisure centres, even local airports that could and should realise asset value that mean we can pay down debt.’
Speaking after the interview, a spokesman for Lord Mandelson said he was not referring to any airport in particular. The spokesman told Crain's: ‘He raised a number of issues that can be looked at. There is no list of assets and clearly the over riding message is that market conditions will have to dictate the sale of any assets.'
‘He is not singling out anything that he thinks should be on a list. There is a debate rather than a decision. It would be wrong to assume that Manchester Airport is top of the list for the Government. They are going to be looking at a range of potential sales and what can be realised.’
