Manchester Airport backs congestion charge
11.08.08
The aviation sector has thrown its weight behind Manchester's transport plans, which would unlock major investment in public transport in return for congestion charging, the Evening News reports. Manchester Airport, Alpha Airports Group, SSP UK Air, British Airways and VLM Airlines have today joined United City, which is supporting the Association of Greater Manchester Authorities' transport plans, and now has 107 members.
The five companies from the aviation sector employ almost 4000 staff on the Manchester Airport site - more than 20 percent of the total workforce. Manchester Airport's managing director, Andrew Cornish, told the newspaper: ‘Improving the way that our passengers and staff access the airport is a key objective of our Master Plan, and a successful TIF bid would enable us to reach our targets within the next 5 years.’
Peel Holdings, the property giant that owns rival Liverpool Airport, is leading the Greater Manchester Momentum Group, which is opposed to road pricing.
