A drunken British passenger triggered a bomb scare on an Emirates flight from Manchester Airport to Dubai yesterday, Dubai airport sources told Gulf News. The passenger had a row with one of the air stewardesses after the plane had landed at 06:40 and told her that a bomb was hidden in the aircraft, which turned out to be hoax.
The stewardess informed the pilot of the passenger's bomb comments, and he alerted the airport control tower. All passengers were evacuated and Dubai Police explosive experts and sniffer dogs searched the plane. No bomb was found.
A police officer at Dubai airport told Gulf News: ‘Dubai airport officials alerted security officials who took all necessary precautionary measures. There was a bomb threat and we took all safety measures to ensure that there was no untoward incident.’
An Emirates spokesperson said: ‘We can confirm there was an incident involving a passenger aboard EK20 from Manchester on Wednesday after it had landed in Dubai. The captain immediately alerted the Department of Civil Aviation (DCA) who took charge of the situation. The passenger is now in police custody.'
Major-General Khamis Mattar Al Mazeina, Deputy Commander-in-Chief of the Dubai Police, said legal action would be taken against the passenger who would be transferred to the Public Prosecution. He said ‘The police will take strict action to ensure that such incidents are not repeated.'
