Customs at Manchester Airport seized £½m cash and 12m cigarettes in 2010
09.01.11
More than £500,000 in cash and 12 million cigarettes were seized by Manchester Airport customs staff last year. Cash totaling £509,770 was detained in 43 separate cases by UK Border Agency officers carrying out checks on passengers leaving the country. The cases included one incident where cash was hidden in a pack of disposable nappies in a bid to bypass the security system.
The money was detected by specially-trained sniffer dogs. Under proceeds of crime laws, cash can be held by UKBA officials and only returned if it can be proved in court that it came from a legitimate source. In addition to the cash, 12 million cigarettes were also seized at the airport in 2010. They were destroyed, usually burnt at electricity generating plants.
