Naked scanners at all Manchester Airport terminals

Full body scanners will be operating at every terminal in Manchester Airport within the next two weeks, the Evening News reports. The X-ray machines allow security staff to see ‘naked’ images of passengers as they check for hidden weapons and explosives. From the week beginning April 19, any passenger using the airport could be put through the controversial devices.
The £80,000 Rapiscan machine was first installed in Terminal 2 in October as part of a trial. However, they were made compulsory by the government in February as part of a radical security shake-up following the attempted terrorist attack on a flight from Amsterdam to Detroit in Christmas day. The newspaper reports that at least two more scanners – one each for terminals 1 and 3 – will be installed within the next two weeks.
A spokesman for the airport confirmed that meetings were being held to finalise the installation and said passengers were becoming increasingly aware of the technology. He told the newspaper: ‘Over 15,000 people have passed through [the scanner] so far and passengers are accepting it as part of the security process. We have staff on hand to talk passengers through the process if they have any concerns and the vast majority are prepared to be scanned once they know why the scanner is being used. We have put strict procedures in place to reassure passengers that their privacy will be protected and we will continue to work with organisations and groups to show what the process is all about.’
