Virgin Atlantic will start twice-weekly nonstop air service between Manchester Airport and Las Vegas next year. Flights will operate on Thursdays and Sundays using a Boeing 747-400 and beginning April 3, 2011.The route will be the carrier's third from Manchester.
Steve Ridgway, chief executive of Virgin Atlantic, said: ‘We are delighted to be able to announce direct services from Manchester to Las Vegas. The decision to expand our Manchester flying program underlines our commitment to flying to long-haul destinations from regional airports in the UK. These Manchester flights will be a great addition to our current services.
The route was previously operated by bmi, but did not fit in German parent Lufthansa's operational plans and was axed last April. The route was inaugurated by bmi in November 2004 and flew 80 percent full at its peak.
The service will feature 14 upper-class suites where passengers can enjoy a three course meal and a private bar. Virgin Atlantic also operates flights from Manchester to Orlando and Barbados, which carried nearly half a million passengers in 2009. It operates flights from Gatwick to Las Vegas.
Andrew Cornish, managing director of Manchester Airport said: ‘Virgin are a key partner and for them to reaffirm their commitment in a testing marketplace is testament to the strength of Manchester. We are pleased to see another major airline expanding out of Manchester. This is great news for our passengers and further strengthens the airport's long haul network.’
