VLM London City - Manchester Airport flights 'boosted by train troubles'
04.01.08
Travellers affected by ongoing rail disruption have been increasingly looking to domestic flights to get around the UK. The problems on the national rail network have boosted passenger numbers on flights between London City and Manchester Airport, according to flights operator VLM Airlines.
Train services in the West Midlands and the north-west have been severely affected by engineering work which was supposed to have been completed by New Year's Eve. Rail routes out of London to Birmingham, Northampton, Liverpool and other locations have been disrupted, and many travellers have turned to air travel to reach their destinations.
A spokesman for VLM said that 2008 had got off to 'a flying start', with 'an unexpected boost' in passenger numbers between London City and Manchester Airport. Flights between London and Manchester were almost sold out on Wednesday (January 2) and forward bookings on the route are also strong.
The rail disruption could stretch into next week as repair and engineering work continues beyond schedule, according to the Guardian newspaper.
