Crowds greet superjumbo at Manchester Airport
02.09.10
Thousands of people were at Manchester Airport to see the arrival of the world’s biggest passenger plane. It touched down for the first time at 12:25 yesterday and headed back for Dubai at 14:10 in what will become a regular service to and from the airport.
It is also the first time an A380, the world’s largest airliner, has been used to fly regular services to and from a regional airport. The plane, which seats 517, was expected to depart with a high load factor, setting a Manchester Airport record for the most passengers to depart on a scheduled service.
Manchester Airport's MD Andrew Cornish said: ‘This is a really significant day for aviation here in the North West and we aim to celebrate it.’ Emirates group executive vice chairman, Maurice Flanagan, added: ‘This is a historic moment for Emirates as we bring our 21st century superjumbo to the North West 20 years after our first flight from the region. Our Manchester service has been an incredible success story, and we’re delighted to be opening the next chapter today.’
