Council approve Lydd Airport expansion
05.03.10
Controversial plans to develop Lydd Airport in Kent were backed by councillors. In spite of fears of extra noise and harm to the environment, Shepway District Council approved the airport's plans to construct a new terminal and lengthen its runway by nearly 300m (328yds) after a seven-hour meeting.
Planning officers had recommended refusing the application, but members voted 27 to 12 in favour of it. The meeting ended at 02:00 yesterday with the approval of plans to construct the runway extension plus a 150m (164yds) starter apron, where planes are parked, loaded and boarded. The new terminal will be able to dealing with up to 500,000 passengers a year.
Lydd Airport managing director Jonathan Gordon described the decision as 'a victory for the people of Shepway'. He said: 'We put forward a compelling case for allowing the controlled growth of the airport and when councillors took stock of the overwhelming body of proof in front of them, they have been persuaded to vote in a positive way. They have made the appropriate choice for the future of our community.'
