O’Leary on Stelios’ Fastjet: ‘don’t hold your breath’
30.09.11
Ryanair CEO Michael O’Leary said that rival Sir Stelios Haji-Ioannou will struggle to repeat his success with easyJet should he start another airline. He said: ‘If he were to set up a airline in Europe this time around it would be much more difficult because Ryanair is much larger than when he set up easyJet and easyJet is much larger. All he has done so far is set up one page on the Internet. I wouldn’t hold my breath.’
Sir Stelios told easyJet this week that he intended to found a new airline called Fastjet. Still easyJet’s largest shareholder, he has been in a dispute with the airline’s management over a number of issues including executive pay, expansion plans and aircraft orders for about three years.
