Airline fees quadruple in two years

Extra charges imposed by budget airlines for checking in luggage, priority boarding, paying by credit card and checking in at the airport have quadrupled in the past two years, the Telegraph reports. It says that airlines will make hundreds of millions of pounds from these fees this year, as they attempt to raise revenues during a time of tough economic conditions and rising fuel costs.
According to the newspaper, Bmibaby has raised bag check-in charges from £2.50 to nearly £12, easyJet from £2 to £6 and Flybe from £2 to £8. Since April last year priority boarding fees with Ryanair have increased from £2 to £4, its airport check-in fee from £2 to £4 and its checked bag fee from £3 to £8. easyJet’s priority boarding fee now costs up to £15 return.
Between April and June this year easyJet earned more than £85 million in ancillary revenue (which includes fees for infants, credit cards, baggage, priority boarding and sports equipment), a 93 percent increase on the same period last year. In 2007 Ryanair made more than £363 million in ancillary revenue, a figure which is expected to rise to more than £400 million this year.
