easyJet announce allocated seats trial
16.11.11
easyJet is to trail mandatory seat reservations, but unlike rival Ryanair, which has been trialling a system whereby passengers can pre book the most popular seats, with the usual stampede for the rest of the plane, easyJet will allocate seats on the whole plane.
Rival Ryanair has been running a trial where it charges £10 per flight for a seat in the front two rows and those with more legroom over the wings. It recently increased the trail from 40 routes to 80, saying the initial trail had been a success and it would roll out the system to all of its 1500 routes if the new trail was equally positive.
easyJet's chief executive, Carolyn McCall said: ‘We are trialling how we can board in the most efficient, simple way.'
On pricing, an easyJet spokesman said there would be a ‘band’ of fares for the routes that are selected for the trial. ‘We will work out what seats are most attractive and at what price level.’
The budget airline's largest shareholder, Sir Stelios Haji-Ioannou has said that he believes pre-allocated seating would ‘destroy shareholder value.’
