easyJet uses new aircraft coating to cut fuel bills
14.02.11
easyJet is testing a revolutionary nano-technology coating on eight of its aircraft, aimed at reducing drag and fuel consumption. The budget airline says that it is the first commercial airline to trial the coating, which is already used by US military aircraft.
The coating works by bonding to the paint surface and reducing the build up of debris on the aircraft structure, which in turn reduces drag. The ultra-thin film is one micron (one millionth of a metre) thick, and adds only four ounces to the aircraft weight. Manufacturers TripleO estimate that it could reduce easyJet’s fuel consumption by 1 - 2 percent - which would be £7m - £14m based on last year's costs.
The airline is trialling the coating on eight aircraft, and will compare fuel consumption with the rest of the fleet over a twelve month period.
