Flight path plans 'still being considered'
02.10.08
The controversial proposals to change the flight paths out of Luton Airport and others in the South East are still being considered, after a public consultation revealed huge opposition to plans, Dunstable Today reports.
National Air Traffic Services (NATS), the company proposing the changes, says it is looking at further options for Luton departures affecting Caddington and Slip End, and there may need to be another consultation.
The proposals for departing westerly flights would see flight paths concentrated over Caddington and Slip End, rather than over a wider area. Of the thousands of people who responded to the company's consultation earlier this year, 86% said they were opposed to the plans, mainly because of the increase in noise they would cause in rural areas.
Pete Whysall, head of airspace development at NATS, told the newspaper: 'In the consultation we said no changes would be implemented before March 2009; that timescale assumed we would be in a position to submit an airspace change proposal to the Civil Aviation Authority this month, which is no longer the case given the feedback evaluation is still underway.'
'We have always been clear that we will take as long as is necessary to give full consideration to the feedback from the consultation. We will undertake further consultation if required.'
