London City Airport to boost passengers
28.07.08
London City Airport is this week expected to receive planning permission for a 50 percent rise in the number of flights it is permitted to handle each year, according to the Daily Telegraph.
The newspaper reports that Newham Borough Council will to rubber-stamp the findings filed in a report last week, recommending that councillors grant planning permission for the airport to raise maximum air traffic movements from 80,000 to 120,000 a year. The council, which meets on Wednesday, may impose conditions on the permission, for example over noise levels.
London City made its application in response to the government's Aviation White Paper, which required airport operators to maximise use of existing runways. Raising the number of flights will leave the airport on course to handle 3.9m passengers by 2010. The airport is working on a further planning application to raise capacity to 8m passengers a year.
