BA London City – New York flights to stop at Shannon
18.08.08
British Airways has selected Shannon Airport as the stop-over for its long-haul service between London City Airport and New York. The airline will launch a twice-daily business class only service on the route in autumn 2009, using an Airbus 318 with just 32 flat-bed seats, with west bound flights using Shannon as a stop-over for refuelling and clearing US immigration. East bound flights will be non-stop to London City.
The flight must stop over on its route due to the length of the runway at London City airport. The A318 is the largest aircraft allowed into London City, but it cannot carry enough fuel for a direct flight to New York. However, the service will not herald the return of London flights to the west of Ireland airport. BA will only be taking passengers on board at London City and JFK.
Welcoming the announcement, Shannon Airport Director Martin Moroney said that the decision by BA to choose Shannon ahead of other airports that were competing for this business (that would be Dublin) is a 'significant and timely boost for the airport'.
BA's commercial director Robert Boyle said: ‘Our business-only service will be the most convenient way to travel between London and New York. Many City workers will be able to get from their desk to the aircraft in as little as 30 minutes.’
