London City Airport claims jobs rise

London City Airport has released the statistics on its employment of local people - on the eve of a council meeting to decide its planning application to increase flight movements. Along with concessions, airlines and handling agents, there are more than 2,000 people working at London City. Of these, 68 percent live within five miles of the airport, with 29 percent living in Newham.
A Development Control Committee meeting takes place tonight at Newham Town Hall, where City Airport chiefs are hoping to receive council approval to increase plane movements by 50 percent to allow a maximum of 180,000 annually. However, according to the airport's statistics, it is already the largest private-sector employment site in Newham.
