Liverpool Airport to launch carbon capture initiative
30.12.08
Liverpool Airport is to trail experimental carbon capture technology. The airport has teamed with UK-based Origo Industries to launch a program that will capture CO2 emissions from the terminal building. The captured emissions will then be recycled through a photo-bioreactor (PBR) to create algae-based biofuel that will power the airport’s ground vehicles.
The process works by taking captured CO2 and filtering it through Origo’s ‘Ecobox‘ into the PBR, where it is recycled into biofuel. The remaining biomass then goes through a drying process and is put in a burner to heat the airport and supply hot water.
Origo’s system will be installed in January and will provide up to 250 litres of biofuel each day. If the system is successful, the airport has said that it could install a larger unit that would generate up to 3,000 litres per day.
