No free parking at Liverpool Airport for ash victims
22.04.10
Unlike at many other UK airports Liverpool Airport will not waive airport parking fees for passengers stuck abroad by the volcanic ash shutdown. It will only reduce the car parking rates to travellers who were left stranded by flight cancellations.
The airport will reduce its daily overstay penalty to £7, its cheapest normal rate, 'to avoid excessively penalising owners who have been unable to return home and move their vehicle', the Liverpool Echo reports. Under normal circumstances, drivers would be forced to pay £27 for every day their vehicle is left in the airport's car park past their allotted time.
A spokesman for the airport, acknowledged that the grounding of flights across the UK represents a ‘difficult situation’, but defended the need for overstay fees to remain in place. He said: ‘We still have to pay for things like heating, lighting and staff in the car parks and we cannot do that for nothing.’
A number of other UK airports - including Heathrow, Stansted, Gatwick, Luton, Edinburgh and Glasgow - have all said that they will not charge passengers who have overstayed through no fault of their own.
