Talks on Liverpool Airport strike
15.08.09
Last-minute talks are to be held in a bid to prevent baggage handlers at Liverpool airport going out on continuous strike from next Thursday. About 150 workers employed by ServisAir at the airport are due to take action from 20 August in a row over redundancies.
The union claims ServisAir intends to force 51 staff to reapply for 27 jobs. The action would hit passengers taking flights with Ryanair, KLM, Wizzair, Flybe and Thomson. Talks are due to take place on Monday between management, union officials and representatives from the Advisory, Conciliation and Arbitration Service (ACAS).
Terry Mellor, from the GMB union, said: ‘Both sides have agreed to make a final effort to try to avert this stoppage. GMB hope that the company will come to the meeting with proposals that the union can take back to our members to find a way forward in this dispute. Withdrawal of the imminent threat of compulsory redundancies is necessary so as not to disrupt the travel plans of the public.’
