Jet2 respond in fuel surcharge row

Leeds Bradford Airport based budget airline Jet2 has introduced fuel surcharges on its flights – despite recent assurances by its boss that it had bought its fuel for the next 12 months at ‘attractive rates’, the Yorkshire Evening Press reports. However, the airline has responded to criticisms that it had tried to hide the extra cost by giving an assurance that it is now up front with passengers about the full cost of its flights.
Philip Meeson, the chief executive of Jet2, was recently involved in a spat with the boss of Ryanair, Michael O'Leary, after Mr O'Leary suggested the Leeds Bradford based airline might be in danger of ‘going bust’ because of rapidly rising fuel bills.
Mr Meeson responded that 'Jet2 has bought all its fuel for this summer, this coming winter and next summer at attractive rates. Our passengers can rely upon us for many, many years to come.’ But that hasn't stopped the airline from bringing in a fuel surcharge, which varies depending on the distance of the flight involved.
A spokesman for the airline told the newspaper that it had ensured that all advertised fares, on its website and in the press, ‘now included all taxes and charges’. He confirmed that the fuel surcharges had only recently been introduced and that the amount charged varied depending on the distance of the flight and, therefore, the amount of fuel used. He did not explain why the surcharge had been introduced despite Mr Meeson's earlier comments.
