Leeds Bradford Airport launch travel plan
12.09.10
Staff and passengers at Leeds Bradford Airport are being encouraged to ditch their cars in its new travel plan. The airport has joined with Leeds City Council, Metro and West Yorkshire Travel Plan Network to urge people to use sustainable means of travel on journeys to and from the hub.
By 2012 the airport hopes that 30 per cent of its 2,500 staff will arrive to work by either walking, bus, cycling or using a new car share scheme. It is hoped that the collaborative strategy, which includes a tax free bike incentive for staff, personalised travel plans and the promotion of car sharing, will improve travel to and from the airport.
Operations director Carl Lapworth said: ‘The number of cars on local roads attributed to the airport are not as great as people's perceptions. However, every car that we can take off the highway obviously benefits everyone.'
‘We are pleased to be involved in this collaborative action with Leeds City Council and public transport providers to promote sustainable means of transport to both staff and passengers. This is a key component of our surface access strategy.’
'Real-time bus displays will be located on the new £2m redevelopment of the airport forecourt to help improve public transport facilities. We have seen an improved level of frequency of buses coming through the airport. Through recent surveys we have noticed that there has been an increase in passengers and staff using it and that means they are not coming by car.'
