Air ambulance moves to Leeds Bradford
08.08.08
A rescue helicopter will get a new home at Leeds Bradford Airport after a rival airport could not afford to keep it. The Yorkshire Air Ambulance service has transferred a helicopter ambulance previously based at Sheffield City Airport to Leeds Bradford in a bid to reduce overheads.
Paul Gowland, of the Yorkshire Air Ambulance, told the South Yorkshire Star: ‘Previously we shared costs such as fuel and maintenance with other partners who were based at Sheffield City such as South Yorkshire Police. However, with the airport closing this is not cost-effective so the aircraft will return to Leeds Bradford Airport where we have that infrastructure in place.’
The ambulance helicopter was bought after the charity received donations from people who saw Top Gear star Richard Hammond rescued by a similar aircraft after an accident at an airfield near York.
