Leeds Bradford Airport not ready for two bags change
04.01.08
Leeds Bradford Airport has yet to be given permission to relax a rule restricting passengers to one item of hand baggage, with the airport saying that it will not be ready to implement the change on Monday (January 7), when it will be relaxed at 20 other UK airports.
Ruth Kelly, the Minister for Transport, announced in November that airports would be allowed to relax their baggage restrictions in the New Year, if they could show they have sufficient screening capacity while being able to maintain security standards. The Yorkshire airport is one of several, including Gatwick, that have yet to prove to the Department for Transport (DfT) that they can cope with extra bags without compromising security.
A spokesman for Leeds Bradford Airport said: 'Our main concern is the safety and security of passengers. The DfT has indicated that it intends to remove the passenger baggage restrictions for all UK airports from May, 2008. We are in the process of investigating how this facility can be accommodated for its passengers without compromising its aviation security responsibilities.'
