Leeds Bradford Airport targets New York flights
03.12.09
Plans to provide direct daily flights between Leeds Bradford Airport and New York have been unveiled. The airport has issued local businesses with a call to arms to support their campaign to persuade a leading US airline to provide regular direct flights from Yorkshire – the only UK region without such a link.
Tony Hallwood, the airport's commercial director, who established daily US flights from Bristol airport when working there, said Leeds Bradford was currently ‘punching below its weight’ by not having transatlantic services. A daily scheduled service to New York would allow a wide range of onward connections to cities throughout North America.
Mr Hallwood launched the Project America campaign in association with the British American Business Council to the region’s business and leisure industry leaders. He revealed that outline talks had already taken place with four of the five top US airlines but warned people not to expect quick results.
He said the economic benefits to Yorkshire of such a service would be enormous, boosting inward investment, job creation and tourism adding that the US was Yorkshire’s largest trading partner. More than 2,000 regional companies traded with the US and exports were worth £2 billion – 15 percent of the region’s international trade In 2007 125,000 Americans visited Yorkshire with an estimated spend of £40 million. Feedback from local passengers showed that the US was the most requested unserved long-haul destination from Leeds Bradford Airport.
