Kent Airport played a role in keeping air traffic flowing in the wake of the Boeing 777 crash last week, it has been revealed The airport handled diverted planes unable to land at Heathrow because of disruption.
The jumbo jet crash-landed short of the runway at Heathrow at 12:42 last Thursday. A little over 20 minutes later, air traffic controllers at Kent International were called upon to receive a diverted British Airways flight from Dusseldorf. After refuelling the plane, its passengers and crew took off for Heathrow.
Matt Clarke, chief executive of the airport, said: 'Kent International Airport is outside the London Air Traffic Management Area and with a flight time of just 15 minutes between us and Heathrow we are perfectly placed to help mitigate the impact of any disruption at Heathrow.'
'We could have handled many more of the 24 flights that were redirected. This incident shows the value of Kent International as a regional airport and an alternate to airports operating at or near full capacity.'
