Memorial planned at Kent Airport for Iraq war hero
23.11.06
A memorial plaque is being put up at Kent International Airport (Manston) in honour of the first woman to die in action in Iraq. The plaque, in the passenger terminal of the airport, is to remember Flight Lieutenant Sarah-Jayne Mulvihill, from Canterbury, who was killed after her Lynx helicopter was shot down in May over Basra.
The married 32-year-old died along with four other servicemen. Her parents Terry and Susan Poole, from Herne and Broomfield, will be at the ceremony at the end of this month or beginning of December and her brother Jason will unveil the plaque.
Councillor Alan Marsh, who is Mr and Mrs Poole's county councillor, came up with the idea of a memorial. The former civilian pilot said: 'What we're coming up with is a true dedication from the people of Kent to a girl of Kent. She is a true reflection of the values that we have in this country and we are honour bound to acknowledge both her sacrifice and her courage.'
The memorial will include the last picture taken by the RAF of Flt Lt Mulvihill in uniform and a brief description of how she died.
