Kent Airport cargo up almost 100%
22.04.07
Kent International Airport handled 7,841 tonnes of freight in the first three months of this year, compared to 4,182 tonnes in the same period in 2006. This represents a year-on-year rise of nearly 100%.
Freight volumes at the airport have risen steadily under the ownership of New Zealand infrastructure company Infratil, after the airport's owner went bust in 2005 trying to introduce passenger flights from Kent International (Manson). In December 2006, during a traditionally strong seasonal period for cargo, the monthly tonnage broke the 3,000 barrier for the first time since Infratil bought the airport assets in August 2005.
The airport's recently appointed general manager, Matt Clarke, said: 'Everyone here is proud of the recent freight performance, which has exceeded expectation. We expect the growth to continue in the coming months.'
'Next month sees the return of regular passenger flights. Infratil management [who also own Prestwick Airport, a hub for budget airline Ryanair] is working actively to bring about the return of regular scheduled flights.'
