Passengers up but freight down at Kent Airport
21.07.07
Kent Airport saw almost 1500 passengers last month, however freight handled by the airport fell by over 40% compared to the same month last year.
The Kent Escapes charter passenger programme saw 1,462 passengers use the airport during the month, an increase of 72% on the prior year. However, this remains a very small passenger throughput in comparison to the capacity and potential of the facilities, with the airport's owners, Infratil, who also own Prestwick airport, desperately trying to establish passenger services at the hub.
Freight handling has been the main source of revenue at Kent International for the last two years, however, the airport handled just 749 tonnes of freight in June, representing a 42% drop on the prior year figure.
A spokesman said that the drop in freight handled 'is likely this seasonal trend will continue during the UK summer growing season, with produce imports not gaining in strength again until the autumn.'
