BA / AA discuss Heathrow slot concessions for EU deal approval
30.01.10
British Airways and American Airlines are in talks with European regulators about giving up slots at Heathrow Airport to win antitrust immunity for their alliance, the Wall Street Journal reports, citing two people familiar with the matter.
A US spokesman for BA confirmed that the airline is in discussions with the European Commission regarding its application for antitrust immunity, but could not elaborate on the specific details of the current discussions. However, he said: ‘British Airways is very hopeful that we won't have to give up any slots.'
BA, American and Iberia need approval from European and American regulators to operate a planned joint venture on certain routes across the Atlantic, collaberating on schedules, fares and frequent flyer programmes. BA and Amercian have said in the past that it does not need to give up the slots at Heathrow in order to win regulatory approval.
